A few years ago my kids & I went to Friendly's on Christmas Eve day. We identified several tables of families to the waitress & told her at the end of their meals to bring us the checks. She told them "Your meal (or icecreams, etc) were taken care of by someone who wishes you a Merry Christmas."
Now, my kids ask for a present or two less than we would normally buy so we can keep up the tradition.

What a wonderful thing to do. I am sure that it also was a very important lesson for your children also. I am sure that they will grow up to be as warm and loving as you must be. Had you made the decision to do this before you went into the restaraunt or was it a spur of the moment thing? I applaud you!

It isn't necessarily my act, but my brothers some years ago. My Mother and I surprised my brother during his two day layover in Baltimore on his way to being deployed to serve our country. One of the days we went to DC and packed this elaborate picnic lunch to eat after we went to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. We found a parking spot somewhere (I'm not familiar with the area at all) and began walking the mile or so towards the museum. When we got there we learned that we couldn't carry the bag of lunch in with us. Mother and I immediately thought, "ok, well we can take the food back to the car or just have an early lunch." Then my Brother suggested that he had noticed a man and his son sleeping on the sidewalk under a blanket in one of the buildings shadows about a half mile back and asked if we minded if he gave the food to them. Mother and I were surprised that the thought didn't even occur to us, but was the first thing that he thought of. So we gave him the bags and he literally ran the food the half mile to the man and his son and ran back. While he was gone, Mother and I had the realization that it is so easy and commonplace now-a-days to ignore those in need and just think about ourselves and our own needs. And that, in itself, is a true tragedy. It takes almost no effort to be kind, and the feeling that you get in reward is well worth any inconvenience you may experience in the process or the wake. Have a Merry Christmas!

that is extremely touching and very wise. we do need to all stop and think of others every once in a while, because no matter how bad off we are, there is almost always some one much worse somewhere. and can we not sacrifice some pleasures for others? thank you for the inspiring story. merry christmas
