I was going into Wal-Mart and stopped to talk to a veteran who was asking for donations for the Veterans Hospital in our area. He was really nice and my heart just opened up with love and respect for him and all our veterans who gave up so much for us to have the freedom we enjoy. He had key chains and stuff like that you could choose from for a donation. I gave him $20 and chose a key chain and a mouse pad both with army logo's. I shook his hand and thanked him for his personal sacrifice for our country. A few minutes later a lady came out of the store and he politely asked if she would like to help the veterans assoc. To which she replied, " I uh...I....maybe later". It ripped my heart out and I told the old veteran that I supposed it was a really good thing that our vets didn't say that when asked to serve our country. He smiled at me and said, "Yes I guess not". I smiled back and told him to have a good day. On the way to my car I thought to myself how glad I am to have the common sense to thank a vet when I meet one!

I purchased several bottles of cold remedies, cough drops, etc., and gave them to a family of 12 kids, knowing that the dad's income, sweeping floors at a glass company, was not enough to provide this for the children.

One bright sunny summer day while in line at our local Taco Bell, a woman came in and asked if they had any "old/outdated food." The manager offered her water. I went out to my car, and she and her family were parked next to me. She said ,"Hello" but didn't ask for anything. I overheard her tell her 3 young children that they would find some food soon. One of the kids said, "But what about Fluffy?" (That was a small kitten I later found they had rescued.) I hate giving money to people, but will gladly give food. I went back inside Taco Bell and bought $20 worth if gift certificates, then I went to my car and pulled out 6 cans of cat food I had just bought at the grocery and a bag of miniature Snickers. With my back to them, I put all of this along with crayons and coloring books I had bought for my granddaughter into a bag and tied it up. I then turned around, and walked around her car and gave her the package. She looked tentative and didn't want to take it at first. Slowly, with my encouragement, she opened the package. She then sat down on the edge of the open car door and cried. Across the street is a park. So, to keep the kids from seeing "Mom" fall apart, I suggested we all go and have a picnic. We talked and cried for over an hour while the kids played. This lady had been through hell, but was not a leech. She was on her way to her mother's after leaving an abusive relationship, and needed all the money she had left for gas, or she wouldn't make it the rest of the 250 she had to go. When we were done I asked her where she was going now. She said she was getting gas at the station next to Taco Bell with the last of her money and then heading to her mother's. I told her goodbye, but followed her to the station and paid to have her tank filled before she could get inside to do so herself. Then I quickly slipped away so that she would not be embarrassed.
I often think of her and hope she is doing okay. She certainly was an intelligent woman and a strong one to get those beautiful children out of a harmful relationship. Good bless you Tina, wherever you are.
